Year 4 Terns
Autumn 2 2024
English
Reading
We will continue with the text 'Annie Lumsden, The Girl from the Sea' by David Almond and 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown to develop our reading and comprehension skills. We will discuss our understanding of the text and new vocabulary, retrieve and record information, identify main ideas and summarise these.

Writing
We will continue with the text Varmints by Helen Ward and write an explanation text about the life cycle of a plant with a clear structure.
Using the text FArTHER by Grahame Baker Smith we will explore the concept of dreams and how important they are in our lives. Children create a story-map of the key events from the book to write a sequel, they write a set of instructions to describe how their own flying machine works. Children finish by writing a longer story about an adventure in a sequel to the text.
Science
This half term we will be learning about electricity. Pupils will explore appliances that use electricity, learn how to work with electricity safely and build circuits. They will investigate electrical conductors and insulators and explore the relationship between the number of cells and bulb brightness. Click on the following link to learn more in preparation for our lessons:

Geography
This half term we will explore the question 'Why do some earthquakes cause more damage than others?' We will come to understand why it is that earthquakes only tend to occur in particular areas of the world as a consequence of the pattern and movement of the tectonic plates of the Earth's crust. We will initially investigate the causes and impact of one specific recent earthquake before looking widely at global patterns.

Dance
This half term we will improvise movements using cat characters as a stimulus to perform with drama and emotion. We will perform in a group using dance techniques e.g. unison, matching, canon, contrast, interaction, stage presence, timing and rhythm.

Outdoor and Adventurous
This half term we will take part in our residential visit to Robinwood. We will be involved in a great variety of activities including canoeing, climbing wall, caving and archery. We will also be involved in many team building tasks including Dragon's Quest, the Nightline, the Crate challenge and the dreaded Piranha pool!
Computing

The children will identify the input device (microphone) and output devices (speaker or headphones) when working with sound digitally. They will discuss the ownership of digital audio and the copyright implications of duplicating the work of others. In order to record audio themselves, they will use Bandlab to produce a podcast, which will include editing their work, adding multiple tracks, and opening and saving the audio files. Finally, the children will evaluate their work and give feedback to their peers

Maths
We will complete our learning on the addition & subtraction of 4-digit numbers before moving on to learn about area. We will find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares.
We will then focus on multiplication and division, working initially on multiplication and division facts. Use Hit the Button to practise multiplication facts.
History
This half term we will ask the question 'Why did the arrival of the Romans change Britain?' We will explore the concept of invasion by finding out what it was about Britain that the Romans wanted.  We will find out why, at one point, the Romans were one battle away from being forced to retreat from Britain. We will use evidence to find out how they might have lived and analyse evidence of ruins to suggest what these tell us about the way their towns were designed and for what purpose. Finally, we will begin to understand what gladiators were, what they represented and why they were an important aspect of Roman life.

Jigsaw - Celebrating Differences
This half term we will learn to understand that sometimes we make assumptions based on what people look like and what influences us to make these assumptions. We will learn to know that sometimes bullying is hard to spot and learn what to do if we think it is going on but are not sure. We will learn why witnesses sometimes join in with bullying and sometimes don’t tell. We will learn what is special about us and learn to value the ways in which we are unique.
