Autumn 2 2024

Wonderful Weather
This half term we will be learning about our 'Wonderful Weather'.  It is a science-based topic and the children will learn about pushes and pulls through stories and through the weather, such as the wind blowing a hat off your head!  The children will explore floating and sinking, learning to sort objects using simple criteria - floats / doesn't float.  Changes will be investigated through the experiment 'can we make ice?'  The children will investigate where ice can be made and will learn what happens to ice when it is no longer frozen.  Let's hope we get some frosty days to help us to investigate this fully!
Have a look at the word bank below, you can use some of the topic words and see which ones your child understands and uses.
Maths

We will continue to work with numbers up to 3 to ensure the children are solid in their understanding and ready to move onto larger numbers.  Children will learn to count out small quantities when asked to and will begin to subitise 3 things, recognising small quantities without needing to count.

Children will look at quantities of objects and compare, saying when there is ‘more’ or ‘less’.  They will sequence pictures, thinking of what comes first, next and last.

The children will explore different shapes and begin to recognise them in the classroom through shape hunts and sorting activities.

The children will be encouraged to talk about objects to build up their vocabulary and learn about how things are the same/different.

Personal and Social Development
Now that the children are settled into Nursery we will continue to observe them to see how they interact with other children, playing alongside them and extending play and ideas.

The children will learn to talk about their feelings and, with help,  begin to think about the feelings of others.  If conflicts arise they will work with adults to resolve them, asking for help when they need it.  This will help the children to develop their negotiation skills and to solve problems using words rather than actions.

Physical Development

Mark making and cutting will be part of our continuous provision.  There will also be times when children work with an adult to practice these skills, receiving one-to-one support when needed.  Gross motor control  and spatial awareness will be developed during Squiggle While You Wiggle and during movement sessions including a session from Tiddlywinks.

If you'd like to support your child with their fine motor control, have a look at the link below.  It gives you ideas of things that can help.
